The preserve offers spectacular views of South Fowl Lake, the Pigeon River valley, and "mountains" of the border country. Also, there is a large, handmade sign that reads “Middle Falls, 7 miles —>” at the beginning of the loop that is very misleading. There is a discrepancy between the AllTrails distance and the distance listed on the state park maps. It’s so muddy! Lots of photo ops. We measured our hike to be 5.5 miles RT if you include the High Falls. Charitable Solicitation Disclosures Not an easy hike but rewarding for the kids. The majority of the trail goes through forest with some narrow overgrown sections.
Fairly easy trail with some areas with roots and rocks (typical for North Shore trails), one steep, but definitely manageable, uphill. We finished in about 2.5 hours. Trail is paved and very well maintained. Many parts overgrown and need to ne cleared. Love traveling up to northern Minnesota every year just to see the falls and enjoy the fresh air and peace and quiet! Dogs are also able to use this trail. Beautiful water falls. Share. On the Minnesota side it is a short walk to the falls on a pathed trail. Alpine plants from the Rocky Mountains and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are joined by arctic plants from near Hudson Bay. I was hesitant but am glad we hiked it. Bald eagles are a common sight over the preserve. This is not a hike for young children, older people or faint of heart or those people in poor health. Great lookout toward Isle Royale. This hike starts out like a walk in the park but soon becomes challenging. Official brochures say this hike is 4.5 miles so really don't know what distance is correct. Lakeshore, especially that which offers unparalleled views such as the Pigeon River Cliffs property, is critically threatened by development of large second homes.
Parts are overgrown but the views are definitely worth it! Hiked this on 8/15 - no bugs and trail in good condition with a couple areas of mud. Due north of Hovland, Minnesota, along the Minnesota/Ontario border where the Pigeon River leaves South Fowl Lake. Enjoy your visit to the parks in the area to see the river. Very scenic rewards!
